James Sunter

James Sunter is ELP's Group Manager - Native Title and also heads our Land Access team.

James was a lawyer with Crown Law in the Queensland Government before working with the Department of the Premier and Cabinet and the Department of Natural Resources and Water as a Senior State Negotiator. He holds a Bachelor of Laws.

James was involved in the negotiation of a number of the early native title agreements in mining in Queensland, including the Statewide Model Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) Project and the Small Miners ILUA Project. More recently, James was the Queensland Government's lead negotiator in the landmark Kuku Yalanji ILUA package in the Daintree and Bloomfield River region.

James has significant experience in dealing with native title, cultural heritage and government issues and approvals.

James has also taken a keen interest in the government's Land Access Framework, initially through the QRC's Exploration Committee. As the leader of our Land Access team, James has been engaging directly with DEEDI on policy, implementation and review of the land access legislation on behalf of ELP's clients.
